Abstract
The bondability of a light metal (i.e. Al, Mg or Ti or alloy of one or more thereof in which the said metal(s) is the major constituent) surface toward organic polymeric material is improved by forming a film on said surface by treatment with an acid solution of a nitrogen-containing sulphonic acid. Many examples are given of suitable sulphonic acids; those containing a polar group such as imino, nitro, hydroxy, carboxy and cyano, are preferred. The solution may be aqueous and/or in an alcohol, such as methanol or ethanol, a glycol, glycerol or glycol ether. The pH of the solution should be below 6: if the sulphonic acid does not itself provide the desired pH another acid may be added, e.g. acetic, hydrochloric, nitric, hydrofluoric (or salt such as bifluoride), sulphuric or boric acid. An oxidizing agent may also be incorporated: examples given are peracetic, persulphuric, periodic and perchloric acids and their salts, peroxides, perborates, chlorites, permanganates, chromic acid and nitric acid. Dry mixtures may be prepared of the sulphonic acid with (a) an acid salt (such as fluoride), and (b) an oxidizing agent. Among polymeric materials referred to are phenol-aldehyde, urea-aldehyde, furfural, epoxy, polyester, silicone, polyvinyl and acrylic resins, and polychloroprene, polybutadiene, neoprene and butyl rubber. Specific examples of cast and wrought aluminium-base alloys, magnesium-base alloys and titanium-base alloys are disclosed.
