Abstract
The bondability of an aluminium or aluminium-base alloy surface toward organic polymeric material is improved by treating the surface with a nitrosulphonic acid solution containing nitric acid and/or boric acid. The solution should have a pH of 0.5-4 and should be free of strong acid other than the nitrosulphonic and nitric acids, although it may, if desired, contain the hydrofluoric acid generated by the addition of up to 5% by weight of a fluoride based on the weight of the nitrosulphonic acid. Suitable nitrosulphonic acids (which may be added to the solution as such or as salts) have the formula R(SO3H)n(NO2)m where R is an organic radical, preferably aromatic, and n and m are 1 or more: specific examples are given. Boric acid may be added as such or as a borate. The solution may also contain a non-ionic wetting agent and an aluminium complexing agent. The solvent for the solution may be water and/or methanol, ethanol, a glycerol, glycol or glycol ether.
