Abstract

856,610. Tube couplings. CARLSSON & LARSSON A.B. Sept. 30, 1959 [Oct. 1, 1958], No. 33133/59. Class 99(1). In a coupling wherein metal tubes 1 are connected by a metal sleeve 3 having an internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the tubes, there are local sharppointed engaging elements or dis-continuities and sealing elements in the annular space between the sleeve and tubes and which are adapted, by radial compression of the sleeve, to cause such a local deformation of the corresponding contact places that the sleeve and tube, by positive interengagement in the deformations thereby produced, form a rigid unit resistant to compression in the coupling. As shown, the sleeve is provided with grooves 4, 5 which receive sealing rings 6, 7 of polytetrafluoroethylene, rubber or zinc, one wall of each groove being extended radially to form edges 8, 9 such that when the sleeve is compressed those edges are pressed into the walls of the tubes. In modifications, (a) the grooves 4, 5 receive local circumferential beads formed in the walls of the tube by compression of the sleeve, (b) hard particles 11, Fig. 4, within an elastic sealing mass 12 between the sleeve and tubes are pressed into the walls of the sleeve and tubes, and (c) the edges 8, 9 are in the same plane as the inner wall of the sleeve and the latter has external, annular beads ; alternatively, the beads are incorporated in the dies for compression of the sleeve. The edges 8, 9 may be helical in form and have interruptions therein.
