[Also in Group XXXV] In a carton-filling machine, Fig. 1a, a granular product is fed from an hopper 20 via an adjustable gate 30 on to a vibrating conveyer 19. A scale-pan 21 is mounted at a predetermined angle to the horizontal and on a skew with respect to the conveyer and distributes the granular product into feed shoots 23, the movement of which is synchronised with a further conveyer 14 carrying cartons C. Movement of the scale-pan 21, through a balance 50, and an automatic electric control system (see Group XXXV) determines the energisation of a vibrator 18 driving the conveyer 19. A switch 16 stops the vibrator when there are no cartons on the conveyer 14. In a modification, Fig. 6, the vibrator and conveyer 19 are replaced by a moving belt conveyer 219 driven by a motor 242. An adjustable gate 230 has a roller 230b, with projections engaging the granular product, driven by a motor M, the speed of which is controlled by a scale pan 221. The direction of rotation of the motor M is selected by manual switches 255, 257 in dependence on the type of product being fed. A sloping channel, Fig. 5 (not shown), may be interposed between the conveyer and the scale pan 21. The funnels 23 may be scanned by a photo-cell arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown), for stopping the system when a funnel is clogged. U.S.A. Specification 2,320,581 is referred to.
