A vibrating spreader feeder comprises a relatively long narrow tapered tray 1 which has a discharge edge 8 cut on a bias and a series of longitudinal vertical guides 9 arranged parallel to the direction of reciprocatory motion to cause the material to be discharged in a substantially uniform curtain. The upper edges of the guides are inclined downwards towards the edge 8. The guides may be replaced by a substantially vertical weir-plate mounted along the edge 8. This plate tapers downwardly from the feed end of the tray and has means for adjusting the height and slope of its top edge. It may also consist of a series of thin plates 24, Fig. 5, adjustably clamped together by a bar 23 so that their upper edges approximate to a shallow arc. The tray is supported by pivoted arms 2 and is reciprocated by a rotary cam 4 which engages a follower 6 on the rear end of the tray. A counterbalanced shoot 12 is mounted pivotally in upward extensions 10 of the tray and is disposed below a fixed hopper 17 in such a way that materials can escape only through the gap 18 between its mouth and the surface of the shoot. The shoot is counterbalanced by an adjustable spring 15 in conjunction with a dashpot 16. An extension 20 of the shoot 12 operates a mechanical linkage, electrical switch-gear, or pneumatic or hydraulic valve gear 19 immediately before the lower and upper limits of travel of the shoot to start, stop or control the speed of either the feeder or processing machinery associated therewith.
