Abstract
Polyethylene is prepared by polymerization in an oxygen-free solvent and using as catalyst the product of three components, the first being a compound of a Group IVA, VA, or VIA metal, the second comprising a trialkyl aluminium, a dialkyl aluminium halide and/or a dialkyl monoalkoxy aluminium, and the third being obtained by treating the product of the first and second components with oxygen or an organic peroxide. The third component may be prepared by blowing an oxygen-containing gas into the mixed first and second components, or by adding thereto a solvent containing oxygen. Alternatively a polyethylene obtained by the use of a normal Ziegler type catalyst may be contacted with oxygen, whereby the catalyst contained in the polymer is oxidized, and the resulting material is then used as the third component. The polymerization may be effected continuously or batchwise with continuous addition of ethylene. Polyethylene of high bulk density is obtained.ALSO:A catalyst used in the polymerization of ethylene comprises the product of three components, the first being a compound of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal, the second comprising a trialkyl aluminium, a dialkyl aluminium halide and/or a dialkyl monoalkoxy aluminium, and the third being obtained by treating the product of the first and second components with oxygen or an organic peroxide in a solvent. The third component may be prepared by blowing an oxygen-containing gas into the mixed first and second components, or by adding thereto a solvent containing oxygen. Alternatively a polyethylene obtained by the use of a normal Ziegler type catalyst may be contacted with oxygen, whereby the catalyst contained in the polymer is oxidized, and the resulting material is then used as the third component. Particular compounds preferred for use in the production of the catalyst are the chlorides, oxychlorides and acetyl-acetonyl salts of Ti, Zr and Cr, and AlEt3, (iBu)2AlCl, Et2AlCl and Et2Al.OEt.
