Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized at a pressure above 1700 kg./cm.2 in the presence of 10 to 25% of nitrogen, by moles of the total mixture. Preferred proportion is 12 to 20%, and chain transfer agents such as propylene, hydrogen, propane, ketones and vinyl acetate may also be present. The products may be compounded with convention ingredients and used for making films, mouldings and coatings. In an example, ethylene is polymerized in a two-zone autoclave at 180 DEG and 260 DEG C. in the presence of nitrogen and propylene.
