[Also in Group XXIII] A cageless roller bearing comprises inner and outer races 6, 2, Fig. 1, and relatively flexible solid or helicallywound rollers 10 which have a concave outer surface 20 and contact the races at their ends, the inner surface of the inner race 6 being provided with a short cylindrical portion 14 adjacent its transverse centre adapted to cause the rollers to be deflected outwardly from the axis A-A intermediate their ends. In a modification, Fig. 3, the outer race 22 has a cylindrical inner surface 24 and an inner race in the form of a shaft 26 with a convex outer surface 28; the rollers 34 are provided with a concave outer surface, as before, and are sufficiently flexible to bend the slight amount required. Fig. 5 shows a bearing permitting a shaft 36 to move axially under expansion and contraction due to heat, the shaft having secured thereto, e.g. by a setscrew 40, the inner race 38 which has a convex outer surface 42 and is provided with shoulders 44 for limiting axial movement of the concave rollers 46; the outer race has a cylindrical inner surface 50 and a convex outer surface 52 which is preferably spherical to mate with a like surface on a housing 56, 60.
