Abstract
853,947. Variable resistors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Dec. 18,1957 [Dec. 18, 1956], No. 38518/56. Class 37 A variable resistor or potentiometer, having a moulded resistive track, has at least one of. the normally fixed contacts replaced by a brush, movable relative to the track. The resistance element is formed as a moulded track 1, 2 of which the part 1 has a considerably higher resistance than the part 2, and is mounted on the control knob 3. An insulating segment la may be provided on the track. The base of the potentiometer comprises an insulating disc 5 in which are embedded three carbon contact brushes 6, 7, 8 for cooperation with the track. The disc and knob are rotatably connected by a bolt 4 which passes through centrally provided holes. If the resistivity of segment 2 is made very low, the device may be used as a constant totalresistance potentiometer using one-third of a revolution, or if the segment 1a is omitted, and the segment 2 given an appreciable resistivity (e.g. one-half that of segment 1) two-thirds of a revolution may be. used, the total resistance varying with potentiometer setting.
