828,755. Variable resistors. MORGANITE RESISTORS Ltd. Nov. 26, 1957, No. 36895/57. Class 37. A variable resistor having a resistive track of the type having a smooth surface, has a contact movable along the track, and a wiping means of insulating ma. terial positioned around the contact to sweep the. track, the contact being adapted to press the wiping means upon the track. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the resistive track 1 may be a carbon layer, a metal or oxide film or moulded plastic upon an insulating support 2 and may be of any shape, e.g. flat and annular, flat and straight or cylindrical. The movable contact 3 is surrounded by a ring of insulating material 4 (e.g. felt, rubber or plastic) both being movable together along an electricallyresistive track so that the ring wipes dust from the track in order to reduce the " noise " due to variations in contact resistance. In alternative embodiments, the resistor may be provided with a plurality of contacts, either with a ring of insulating material completely surrounding each contact or with a single ring surrounding more than one contact.
