Abstract

[Also in Divisions G1 and H1] Combined switching and resistance variation in a plurality of circuits is obtained by movement of a pivoted member 42 carrying sectorshaped pieces 47 of spongy conductive material or spongy insulating material impregnated with conductive powder. Movement of the member 42 first brings one of the pieces 47 into contact with a fixed contact on support 44 and further movement compresses 47 to reduce the resistance in circuit. The lever may be movable in two perpendicular directions only. Alternatively, the four pieces 47 may be replaced by an annular ring of the same spongy resistive material. An on-off variable speed controller for a sewing machine motor may be formed by placing a wedge 6 of spongy resistive material between two plates 1, 2 (Fig. 1, not shown) pivoted together at one end and movable against a spring 9, first to close a circuit and then to reduce the resistance of the resistive material 6.
