Abstract
853,631. Diaphragm valves. FORTUNE, R. Feb. 18, 1957 [Feb. 17, 1956], No. 5370/57. Class 135. A diaphragm valve assembly comprises a valve body A with inlet and outlet passages 1 both leading to a flow chamber 3 having opposed opening surrounded by flanges 4, dish-shaped flexible diaphragms 8 clamped between the flanges 4 and matching flanges 5 on valve bonnets C, and a central bridge member B arranged transversely in the chamber 3 and provided with transverse seats or weirs 12 curved towards one another for the diaphragms 8. The diaphragms may be operated simultaneously or independently and when both are fully raised from their seats, two flow paths of equal flow capacity are provided between the inlet and outlet passages. Each diaphragm 8 has on its outer side a boss with a rigid insert 17 connected by a screw 34 to a compressor 22 prevented from rotating by horns 31 in grooves 66. A threaded stem 26 with a head or flange 27 is secured to each compressor 22 by a flanged retaining cap 24. A key 29 on the head 27 engages a slot 30 as described in Specification 701,026. Axial movement of the stems 26 to operate the diaphragms is effected by internally-threaded flanged sleeves 61 rotatably mounted in the bonnets. The bridge member B has a bore 37 containing flanged bearings 38, 41 for mounting a shaft 48. The shaft 48 carries a hand wheel 51 at one end and a bevel gear 54 at the other. The bearing 38 forms the trunnion of a frame 39 supporting aligned countershafts 56. Each countershaft carries a bevel gear 57 meshing with the gear 54 and also a spur gear 58 meshing with a further spur gear 59 on the respective sleeve 61. Thus rotation of the hand wheel 51 moves the diaphragms 8 to or from their seats simultaneously. The frame 39 is anchored by a pin 67 engaging aligned lugs. Either flow control orifice may be closed and then retained closed by removing the corresponding pinion 58 and using the respective pinion 59 as a hand wheel. The gearing may be dispensed with entirely and the spur gears 59 replaced by separate hand wheels.
