Abstract
921,610. Hydraulic couplings. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1959 [Aug. 25, 1958], No. 26588/59. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic coupling comprises impeller and turbine members 16, 26, and a rotary valve means 58 controlling fluid flow through an outlet passage 52 communicating with the fluid circuit. The outlet passages 52 leading from the space 48 between the impeller and turbine members are controlled by the valve means consisting of the bevelled ends 58 of rods 56 which may be disposed within the vanes of the impeller member or be contoured to align with the forward edges of the vanes and are rotated by axial movement of a rod 66 having a rack 64 engaging a gear on the rod 56. Alternatively, the rods 56 may be controlled by manual or automatic rotation of a rod having a bevel gear engaging similar gears on the rods 56. The axes of the outlet passages may be disposed parallel to the axis of the coupling or extend through the impeller member to such a distance that they are controlled by radially-disposed rods 92, Fig. 4, located in lugs 90, 94 on the outside of the impeller casing; the rods 92 may be operated by linkages or gears. Bleed-off passages 54, Fig. 1, communicate with the outlet passages to prevent the accumulation of foreign matter and for cooling purposes. The outlet passages, valves and actuating means may be carried by the turbine member.
