Abstract

492,052. Mixing-valves. HUTCHISON, A., and SHEARDOWN, J. W. April 5, 1937, No. 9537. [Class 135] A valve device for mixing hot and cold water comprises two taps 8, 9 each carried by a screwed spindle 6, 7 in a bonnet or cover 4, 5 and each having a gear wheel 11, 12 which meshes with a third gear wheel 14 on an intermediate spindle 10, parallel to the other two spindles, the cover members 4, 5 being supported in a casing 15 which has an outlet 18 and two cylindrical inlets 20, 21 the rims of which form seats for the washers 4, 5. On operating the spindle 10 by means of a handle 19, cold water only is supplied first, then a mixture of hot and cold water, and finally hot water only. The washers 8, 9, Fig. 1, are held in place by pistons 22, 23. The piston 22 closes the hot water inlet when the washers are both seated whilst the piston 23 is spaced from the cold water inlet 21 by a short stem. As the washers are raised, the piston 22 is raised out of the inlet 20 and the piston 23 passes into the inlet 21. The gear wheel 14 is of such width as to allow the wheels 11, 12 to remain in gear therewith. In Fig. 2, the intermediate spindle also moves axially and is coupled to a tubular valve 26 which alternately closes ports 29, 25, leading from the hot and cold supplies respectively. The cover members 4, 5 are mounted on resilient washers 130, Figs. 1, 2, to enable either valve to be adjusted for wear by screwing down its cover member whilst its gear wheel is held stationary. Alternatively one of the gear wheels 11, 12 may be detached for the same purpose by removing a screw 13. To prevent the valves from being closed too quickly the gear wheel 12 meshes with a further gear wheel on a screwed spindle. The latter carries a cup leather moving a cylinder which has a restricted connection with one of the inlets.
