Abstract
853,584. Liquefied gas storage vessels. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. April 9, 1957 [April 26, 1956], No. 11578/57. Class 8(2). Powder in vacuum insulation 12 located between spaced inner and outer walls 10 of a liquefied gas storage vessel comprises a generally uniform mixture of particles of material 13 having a low thermal conductivity, e.g. silica, perlite, magnesia and carbon black, and of particles of material 14 providing to high resistance to heat transfer by radiation e.g., copper coated mica, aluminium and copper which comprise radiation reflective barriers. Alternatively radiant heat absorptive materials such as oxides of magnesium, zinc, iron, titanium may be mixed with the powdered material of low thermal conductivity, the size range of which varies between 75 and 1500 microns whereas that of the radiant heat resisting particles varies between 50 and 500 microns. Said latter particles are preferably flaky, i.e. of small thickness.
