Abstract
852,441. Reducing lead ores. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO. Oct. 6, 1958, No. 31824/58. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XII] The level of the bath in a blast furnace is kept below the level of the tuyeres and above an opening to a forebay by adjusting the level of the bath in the forebay in response to variations in blast pressure. Slag and metal produced in a lead blast furnace flow through breast opening 16 into tapping bay 17 from which they overflow in a stream 24 over dam 23 into settler 25. The height of dam 23 is adjustable in proportion to the blast pressure used in the furnace so as to maintain the level of the slag 54 at the top of breast opening 16. Tapping bay 17 has a deep tapered notch 20 in its water cooled front wall 19 closed by dam 23, and an insulated cover 35 through which passes a gas burner 36. Slag and bullion separate in settler 25, bullion leaving through trough 26 and flowing into lead pot 27, the slag running through trough 30 into second settler 28 in which further separation occurs and lighter slag runs off through trough 31 into slag pot 29. A stove 33 with a gas burner 34 is applied over trough 30 and a hood 32 over trough 31 and slag pot 29 as well as a hood 40 over stream 24 to take away fume. A tapping block 15 has an emergency tapping opening 53 normally plugged with adobe fire clay mix and surrounded by water cooled coil 50 cast into block 15.
