852,026. Viscometers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 13, 1957 [Aug. 13, 1956], No. 24677/56. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] The apparatus comprises a torsional viscometer, and an air-actuated control system for controlling liquid additions to the liquid charge in the viscometer, the control system being operated by a member 10 movable in accordance with the viscosity of the charge, whereby the addition of liquid is controlled in accordance with the viscosity of the charge. As shown, the viscometer comprises a container 1 rotatable on a spindle 3 supported in bearings 4 by a case 5. A torsion spring 6 is attached to the spindle 3 and to the case 5 and can be adjusted on the spindle by means of a collar 7. An air motor 13 supplied with compressed air by a pipe 12 drives a stirrer 14 in the liquid and this tends to rotate the container 1 against the action of the spring 6, a pointer 8 co-operating with a scale 20 to give an indication of the viscosity. If the viscosity is too low, a vane 10 on the pointer 8 closes an air jet 11 and the resulting increase of pressure in pipe 16 opens a valve 17, allowing thinner to flow from a tank 19 to reduce the viscosity. This operation continues until the required viscosity is reached. In an alternative embodiment, the thinner is contained in a closed tank and pressure on the surface of the thinner when the jet 11 is closed, causes it to flow into the container 1.
