Abstract
820,951. Jet propulsion plant. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. April 16, 1956, No. 11481/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups XI and XXIX] A fuel control for a combustion chamber 10 of a ram jet, comprises a pressure fuel conduit 14 to the chamber, a regulator 18 systematically and continuously varying fuel flow in increasing and decreasing amounts above zero, means 20, 46 sensing the combustion chamber pressure in timed relation with the fuel flow variation, and means responsive to the pressure sensing means for varying the amount of fuel flowing through the regulator. An electric or constant speed motor 16 rotates a butterfly fuel valve 18 and a cylindrical valve 20 having passages 30, 32 at right angles for alternately connecting a passage 24, tuned to eliminate noise and transient pressures, to either side of a spring-loaded piston 46 which actuates a valve 50 controlling the supply of fuel at 52 to either side of a spring-loaded piston 56 operating a fuel valve, the fuel escaping from either side via restrictions 60, 62. At C in Fig. 2, where increased fuel flow produces increased burner pressure, the fuel flow oscillations at 14 will produce burner pressure oscillations at 24, the amplitude being proportional @o the slope of the curve in Fig. 2. At D in Fig. 2, where increase in fuel flow produces decreased burner pressure, the burner pressure oscillations are 180 degrees out of phase. Thus, when the burner pressure corresponds to point C, the pressure in 24, 30, 70, Fig. 1, will be greater than the pressure in 24, 32, 72; piston 46 will move valve 50 to the right and piston 56 will open the fuel valve to increase the fuel flown to correspond with the maximum pressure at point, E. If fuel flow |increases |beyond the point E, the pressure differential across piston 48 is reversed and the fuel valve closes. The piston 46 integrates pressure increases and the spring 48 may bereplaced by another loading device, eg. electronic, if a point of equilibrium other than E is required.
