Abstract

989,983. Regulating I.C. engines. S.U. CARBURETTER CO. Ltd. Feb. 14, 1964 [March 6, 1963], No. 8883/63. Heading FIB. [Also in Division G3] Fuel/air ratio control means in a spark ignition fuel injection I.C. engine comprises a positive displacement engine driven liquid pump, a cam 7 movable longitudinally by engine speed sensing means 6 and rotatable by the main air throttle valve linkage 57, a cam-follower 53 applying variable loading to atmospheric pressure and engine air-intake temperature responsive means 39 coupled to a liquidpowered servo mechanism 8 which controls the output of the fuel injection pump. The output of the engine driven plunger pump (not shown) is delivered to chamber 2A through inlet 16. A diaphragm 10 moves with its support 11 and tube 12 against a spring 19 to an equilibrium position in which the fuel flow through orifice 17 is metered by needle 18. Fuel flows from chamber 3 either through outlet 20 to a pressurized fuel reservoir of a fuel injection pump (not shown) or through passage 15, chamber 2 and passage 21 to chamber 4A. Diaphragm 22 and its support 23 move on a fixed tube 24 are loaded by a constant rate spring 27 which also acts on a valve plate 28. The position of cam 7 controls, through lever 52, the tensile load applied by a spring 45 to a plate 38 which is subjected to compressive loading by capsules 39 which are sensitive to atmospheric pressure and to coolant temperature in channel 59. The resultant force is applied through pin 30 to valve plate 28 which meters fuel flow through orifice 29. Diaphragm 22 and support 23 take up a position corresponding to the pressure drop across the diaphragm, movement being transmitted through arm 32 and rod 35 to control the fuel injection pump delivery. Specification 972,446 is referred to.
