Fluid speed indicators of the type in which pumps a force a liquid contained in a casing into a cylinder d, the outlet f of which is automatically opened more or less according to the speed at which the pumps are driven, so that the height of the piston e indicates the speed. The piston e actuates, by a rack and pinion, a shaft l carrying a cam n. As the shaft l is rotated against the action of a spring, the cam n moves a roller on the end of an arm o<1> attached to the spindle of the valve g, so as to control the outlet f. To enable the piston to respond more quickly to a decrease of speed, there is provided a secondary outlet, which is opened and closed independently of the main outlet by the machine of which the speed is to be measured. An auxiliary valve p is opened by the spur-wheel b, which drives the pumps, through the spindle q, disk r, lever s, pawl t, and arm u. The valve is closed, immediately after it has been opened, by a spring. To compensate for alterations in temperature, a box v containing ether operates, through a lever w, a ring x on the auxiliary valve to control the outlet y.
