MUMFoun and EDWARD lvlnLvILLn HUGG'INS, both citizens of the United States, residing at Plainiicld, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jolt Rammingltachines, of which the following 1s a specification.
rThe invention relates to What are known as jolt ramming machines, and particularly to the valve mechanism for controlling the reciprocating member Whether it be a cylinder or a piston. rll`he invention has ior its primary objects the provision of a -valve mechanism which shall operate With` precision and positiveness; the provision of a valve of a very simple and cheap construction, and one by the use of which the amount of air Wasted is reduced to a minimum, and the provision of a valve which will be moved Works, such cylinder having atits lower end the base portion al, and at its upper end the anvil portion 5 for receiving the impact of the table; G is a block ttingin the recess in the base et and carrying the valve mechanism, such block being removably secured in position by means ot' a series oi' studs 7, one only of which is shown; 8 is an oil lcup connected 'to the cylinder in the'manner shown, and 9 is a drip cock mounted in the block 6 and adapted to drain the cylinder and the chamber carrying the valve parts.

Starting With the parts in the position. shoivn, the operation is as follows-assuming that the plug 11 is coupled to an air supply pipe. Air passes through the passages 10 and 12 to the valve chamber 13 and thence through the passages lil, 15, 1G, 1'?, ldand 19 tothe lower end of the piston, thus causing such piston to rise. This action continues until the packing ,ring passes the exhaust port 21 and brings the annular passage 1'? into communication with Vsuch exhaust port 21. The opening ci this exhaust port 21 permits a. sudden rush of air from the cylinder beneath the piston and from the passages leading to the valve chamber 13, and as result the pressure upon e stem and the upper sides or the valve head is so reduced that valve 2l moves upwardly and cuts off communication between the valveV chamber 13 and the passage la, being held securely in at4 this time by reason et the air pressure applied to the lower side oi.E the head. The supply oi air to the cylinder nou' being cut olf, and the exhaust chamber being open, the Weight of the piston 2 and, the parts carried thereby causes the return ot the parts to the position shown, the lower end of the piston ment striking the upper end of the valve 2l and returning it to the position shown, thus bringing the parts to their original position, the operation being repeated indefinitely as long as air is supplied through the plug 11. The arrangement thus provides for a quick positive closure of the valve and an equally quick positive opening of the 'valve incident tc the engagement between the end of the piston and the end olf the valve.

Having; thus described our invention and illustrated its use, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the iol-` lowing:

A jolt ramining molding machine comprising in combination a cylinder having a. port and an opening` in its vvall above the said port, a vertically movable plunger in said cylinder adapted to uncover said opening, and a valve for controlling; the supply of fluid pressure and allowing its admission into said cylinder to raise the plunger, said valve being held in open position. by the fluid pressure Flowing to the machine and governed as to its closing movement by the uncovering of said opening by the plunger as it moves upwardly.
