Abstract

Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXIX] The level of water in a container, for example the casing of a hydromatic brake, is kept constant at any desired point by supplying water to the lower portion of the container through a pipe 16 from a tank 10 in which the same level is maintained by the operation of a float 20 to the lower end of which is secured a valve 24 closing an outlet port 18. Water is supplied to the tank 10 through a pipe 15. To adjust the point at which the valve 18 opens to release water and hence to control the level of the water in the tank and container the buoyancy of the float can be varied by applying an adjustable downward pressure to a stem 26 attached thereto through an arm 34 which is pivotally connected to a rod 29. The rod 29 is urged downwardly by a spring 38 bearing on a diaphragm 35 to the underside of which air at an adjustable pressure may be admitted through a pipe 40a to offset part of the spring pressure. In modifications the load on the float is applied by means of a beam carrying a sliding weight or by springs applying pressure to each side of a disc adjustably mounted on the float stem.
