Abstract

851,475. Inflatable grippers for handling loads. RAWLINGS, J., and TEMPLEMAN, F. E. July 4, 1957 [April 4, 1956], No. 10322/56. Class 78 (4). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXV] A device for gripping and handling articles comprises an inflatable tube made of flexible material, a surrounding supporting member for the tube, a handle connected to the supporting member and means on the handle for inflating or deflating the tube. The inflatable tube 3 is mounted as by an adhesive on the periphery of a cylindrical member 1, a flexible connection 4 being provided from the tube to a bulb 8 on the handle, for inflating the tube. Alternatively the handle is provided with an axial bore to convey the air from the bulb to the tube. A net bag or sleeve (not shown) is attached to the lower end of the cylinder 1. The cylinder 1 is adjustably pivoted to the handle to allow the relative angle between the axis of the cylinder and the handle to be adjusted. In a modification a projection on the cylinder engages with stops on the handle to allow limited pivotal movement of the cylinder and handle. The tube is inflated hydraulically or pneumatically.
