Abstract

850,156. Ordnance mountings. UHL, S. March 5, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 7633/59. Class 92. A gun 1 Fig. 2, e.g. mounted within a tank cupola 7, having its centre of gravity offset from its trunnion axis 3, is balanced about the axis for every elevational setting by means of a toothed segmental cam 2. Figs. 2, 3 secured on and for angular movement with the axis 3 and a roller chain 4 attached to one end of the cam 2 and to a tension spring 5 secured at 6 to the gun carriage. The roller chain 4 rolls into and out of engagement with the teeth of the cam 2 and the arrangement is such that in large elevational settings of the gun a large spring tension acts with a small segmental leverage about the axis 3 whilst in small elevational settings a small spring tension acts with a large segmental leverage, thus maintaining in all settings a turning movement which balances the gun.
