Abstract

586,981. Gun mountings. LIPPERT, H:, and ENGELER, G. Oct. 3, 1944, No. 18948. [Class 92 (i)] An automatic firearm 3, Fig. 1, on a mounting 1 and having an elevating gear compensating device, such as a spring 11 engaging with a member 10 connected as shown to the cradle 2, is provided with a braking device which prevents movement of the cradle under the action of the compensating device when the firearm is removed from its cradle. As shown in Fig. 2, the elevation and depression of the gun is effected by a shaft .7 having a worm 6 which engages with a wheel 5 geared to the cradle. Normally, the axial thrust on the shaft is to the left and is transmitted to the mounting by a bearing 16 which is urged against a collar 13 on the mounting. On removing the firearm, the compensating device will tend to rotate the cradle in a clockwise direction, thus urging shaft 7 to the right. This force is transmitted by a shoulder 12 on the shaft to an inner ring of a bearing 14, and thence via a bush 15 and bearing 16 to a conical member 17 keyed to the shaft. The member 17 is thus pressed against a fixed ring 20 having an internal bore corresponding to the shape of member 17 and thereby prevents the shaft 7 and consequently the cradle from rotation under the action of the compensating device. In a modification, Fig. 6, the firearm 3 normally engages with a roller on a lever system 26 mounted on the cradle. On removing the firearm, the system moves under the action of a spring 28 and rotates a segment 29, a nose 30 on the segment thereby being moved clear of a spring-pressed roller 33. The roller is now urged by its spring' to the right and becomes clamped between the mounting 1 and the body 31 which is keyed to the cradle, thus locking the cradle against rotation. In another modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), a similar lever system when rocked upon removal of the firearm moves clear of a lever which is then free to move under the action of a spring, the lever being mounted on a screw-threaded member on the cradle, so that when it rotates it also moves axially and clamps the cradle to the trunnion.
