Abstract
632,157. Bearings. NEALE, F. May 13, 1946, No. 14333. [Class 12 (i)] A device for controlling clearances in bearings, shown applied to a ball-joint in a vehicle steering system, but stated to be applicable to ball, journal or thrust bearings, comprises a ball 11 fitted between a cup 12 fixed to the framing 13 and a relatively-movable cup 14. The latter is normally held up to the ball 11 by means of a spring 19 mounted between a button 18 and a shaft 21, which is urged towards the bearing-cup 12 by means of a second spring system. The shaft 21 is threaded for automatic axial adjustment in a nut 15 fixed in the framing 13. Mounted within the shaft 21 are telescopic sleeves 24, 26 to which the ends of a torsion-spring 25 are secured. For energizing the spring 25, a cap 28 screwed on the nut 15 carries a squared spindle 27 engaging the sleeve 26, the sleeve 24 having a corresponding engagement with a squared spindle 23 projecting from the headed end of the shaft 21. Normally, the play of the cup 14 is taken up by the gap between the button 18 and the endface 22 of the shaft 21, the thrust of the spring 19 being sufficient to overcome reaction of the spring 25. Under abnormal conditions through wear or distortion of the ball or bearing elements, the shaft 21 is automatically rotated within the nut 15 to close the gap between the button 18 and the face 22 of the shaft.
