Abstract

966,595. Elevating and training devices. SECRETARY OF STATE, WAR DEPARTMENT. Nov. 6, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961], No. 41406/61. Heading F3C. An elevating 1 and training 2 device for a light weapon, e.g. a machine gun on a tripod mounting, is connected between the weapon and its mounting and comprises a horizontal shaft 3 carried in bearings and a cam or lever arrangement whereby the weapon can be elevated and depressed by rotation of the shaft. The shaft 3 mounted in bearings on a frame 7 is eccentrically fixed in a cylindrical cam 10 rotatably situated in a sleeve 11 which carries a rod 12 and a knob 13 mounted on the weapon (Fig. 1, not shown) such that rotation of the shaft rotates the cam and raises the weapon. At one end of the shaft 3 is the elevating mechanism 1 comprising a hand wheel 14 having a central splined passageway receiving the splined end 18 of the shaft 3, allowing the shaft 3 to slide axially in the passageway, and a concentric recess receiving a cylinder 21 fixed to the frame 7. A brake is formed by a split ring 23 which is fitted in channel 24 between the wheel 14 and the cylinder 21 and is forced into contact with the outer rim 20 of the wheel 14 by a ball 29 forced outwardly by screw 30. At the other end of the shaft 3 is the training mechanism 2 comprising a screw thread 35 engaging an internal screw thread on the shaft 3 and a wheel 40 connected to the screw thread 35 and maintained axially by a flange 37 engaging a clip 39 in a bush 34. The wheel 40 contains a click mechanism, clutch operated for ease in disconnection if smoother operation is required, which is used to indicate the angle of traverse. The frame 7 can be mounted on a ball joint to allow initial coarse adjustment.
