Abstract

1,094,640. Belt feed mechanism for automatic weapons. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. May 6, 1966 [May 18, 1965], No. 20093/66. Heading F3C. An ammunition belt feed mechanism for an automatic weapon 2 comprises a housing 1, a movable feed sprocket 10, an intermittentlyoperated drive mechanism, a coupling for connecting and disconnecting the feed sprocket 10 from the drive mechanism and, at least two belt feed apertures in the housing which are so disposed with respect to the feed sprocket that the direction of movement of the feed sprocket is constant irrespective of which aperture is used. The drive mechanism includes a spring drum 17 rotated in response to the recoil of the weapon or by gas from the barrel by a transmission means acting on a cam 26, pinions 18, 19 driven by the drum 17 and two ratchet couplings 20, 27 housed in the hub 13 of the sprocket 10. The ratchet couplings 20, 27 may be disconnected from the sprocket by actuation of a spring-loaded lever 28 forming the coupling to withdraw a belt from the mechanism. The belt feed apertures are provided, in the case of a rectangular cross-sectioned housing in three of its sides and each aperture is provided with a spring loaded flap 36 the inner surface of which acts as a guide for a belt when the corresponding aperture is not in use and the outer surface acts as a guide when the aperture is in use, the outer surface being pivoted such that it extends into the interior of the housing. The ammunition 7 is fed into the weapon 2 by a lug 11 from a disintegrating belt 8, 9.
