Abstract

405,159. Trench mortars. METALLURGICA BRESCIANA GIA TEMPINI, Brescia, Italy. May 15, 1933, No. 14059. Convention date, May 24, 1932. [Class 92 (ii).] A gun adapted for the semi-automatic discharge of rifle grenades by the. use of propelling charges in the form of blank rifle cartridges has the barrel and breech-bolt moved in opposite directions by lever mechanism for simultaneously loading the projectiles and charges. Figs. 1 and 2 show diagrammatically one form of toggle - lever mechanism for moving the barrel 5 and breech - block 4 in opposite directions with respect to a partition 6 carrying the cartridge chamber 7. The operating lever 18 is mounted on a fixed pivot 17 and connected by links 10 and 11 with the barrel and breech-block, respectively. When the breech is opened, cartridges are loaded from a box magazine 36, Fig. 5, in the loading opening 8, and projectiles from a box magazine 38 in the opening 9. On closing the breech, the barrel moves to enclose the projectile which is centred by spring devices 50, the breech-block forces the cartridge into the chamber 7, and a striker 26 on the breech-block, retained by a pivoted sear 30, is automatically released to fire the cartridge by the engagement of the breechblock with an incline 31 on the sear. A slidable safety button 33 engages an incline on the fixed casing to raise the rear end of the sear and depress its fore end 54 into locking engagement with the breech-block. The hand-lever 18, Fig. 9, is detachably connected to a cross bar 16 by means of a sliding spring catch 45, and a pin 20 engaging holes 21 in the bar permits of adjustment of the handle round the pivot 17. The box magazine 38 is provided with a spring- controlled lever to retain the cartridges, the lever being released by the edge of the opening 9 when the magazine is inserted therein.
