Abstract

850,115. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. ENGINEERING ARTS Ltd. Feb. 27, 1959 [March 8, 1958], No. 7525/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XXVI] A portion 5 of the casing of a motor-driven fan 1 is of square cross-section, with rounded corners 6, the side dimensions being substantially equal to the diameter of the circular ends of the casing. The motor 8 is housed in a hollow streamlined strut 7 extending across the square casing portion 5, the conical driving-connection 11 to the fan being surrounded by a cylindrical fairing 9 on the nose of the strut 7. If the fan handles hot air, the walls of the strut 7 may be insulated, and a diaphragm 14 extending across the strut and fitting closely to the casing 8a of the cooling fan of the motor allows air drawn in laterally through the trailing portion of the strut to be blown over the motor to cool it. A baffle 15 may be provided to ensure that the cooling air follows the configuration of the motor to the forward bearing. The cooling air may be supplied by an auxiliary fan 16 mounted in alignment with the trailing portion of the strut 7.
