Abstract

849,935. Pelletting machines. ABBEY, A. (Union Carbide Corporation). Oct. 21, 1958 [Oct. 22, 1957], No. 32990/57. Class 87(2). A method of making pellets from a thermoplastic material comprises extruding the molten material into a free space, cutting the extrusion into pellets whilst in said free space and causing or allowing the pellets to fall into a body of a cooling liquid maintained at a temperature below the softening point of the material. The free space be a gaseous region in which a spray or droplets of the cooling liquid may be present. The gases may be air, nitrogen, oxygen, argon &c. and may be at pressures above or below atmospheric. Molten material is extruded through the orifices 28 of a jacketted barrel 10, is cut by revolving blades 16 and falls as pellets into a water bath 20. The blades 16 may be cooled by sprays 22 or may dip in the water which may circulate.
