Abstract

1432419 Cellular polyolefines UNION CARBIDE CANADA Ltd 25 June 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 30022/73 Heading C3C Cellular polyolefines, e.g. polyethylene, are made by injecting a gas inert to the polyolefine, e.g. nitrogen, into a molten mass of a C 2 _ 4 olefine, which has been mixed with 0À01-0À20% by wt. of a finely divided polytetrafluoroethylene as a nucleating agent, the molten mass being maintained below the m.p. of the polytetrafluoroethylene, while continuing the mixing, and then cooling the mass. The polytetrafluoroethylene may be mixed with the polyolefine as an aqueous dispersion in an extruder, pelletized and then fed into an extruder where nitrogen is injected and the resultant cellular polyolefine is then extruded.
