Abstract

1,202,127. Extruding foamed thermoplastic synthetic resins. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 21 April, 1969 [31 May. 19681, No. 26237/68. Addition to 1,034,120. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] The extrusion process for making foamed thermoplastic synthetic resin described in Specification 1,034,120 is modified in that the blowing agent used comprises an olefinic hydrocarbon, which term includes mono- and diolefinic hydrocarbons, having from three to five carbon atoms. Specifically mentioned are propylene, butylene, isobutylene, butadiene and isoprene, a preferred mixture for the process being polystytene with isobutylene. More than one of such blowing agents may be used or a mixture including a lower aliphatic hydrocarbon, e.g. isobutylene and pentane and isobutylene and trichlorofluoromethane, where the proportion of the lower aliphatic hydrocarbon may be up to 50% by weight. A list of nucleating agents is given, the resins mentioned being those given in the above-mentioned Specification. The resin/blowing agent mixture may be cooled prior to extrusion, e.g. by means of water, oil or low-pressure steam flow in a suitably disposed jacket. The extrusion dies that may be used are as described in Specifications 1,034,120, 1,098,408, 1.159,920 and 1,166,937. In ex amples, a polystyrene/isobutylene mixture having 11À5% by weight of the latter was extruded to form a board of density 1À28 lbs./cu. ft., a 1À35 lbs./cu. ft. polystyrene board was produced using a 70: 30% isobutylene/trichlorofluoromethane mixture, as blowing agent and a 1À55 lbs./cu. ft. polystyrene board was produced using 14% by weight butadiene in the foamable mixture.
