Abstract

1,182,964. Extruding foamed thermoplastics. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 31 July, 1968 [1 Sept., 1967], No. 40099/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] A foamed or foamable composition is produced by continuously heat-softening and pressurizing a thermoplastic synthetic resin in an extruder, injecting a mixture of a volatile blowing agent and a halogen-containing flame-retardant into the resin which is then mixed under pressure and the composition is conveyed to the extruder outlet where it is discharged. The discharged composition may be allowed to expand in a zone at a lower pressure than in the extruder or it may be chilled before it expands so as to produce a foamable composition. The resin may be polystyrene, the blowing agent may be isobutene or methylene chloride and the flame-retardant may be pentabromomonochlorocyclohexane, hexabromocyclododecatriene, 2,3-dibromopropyl phosphate, 2,2- bis - 4 - allyloxy - 3,5 - dibromophenyl propane, or tribromophenyl allyl ether. The composition may be extruded in the form of a board or sheet. In examples polystyrene pellets were used which were coated with silica, and the extruder was fitted with an adjustable pressure-reducing valve behind a slit die and an injector for feeding isobutene into the barrel.
