Abstract

1316465 Tobacco-smoke filters MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd 27 July 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 40878/70 Heading A2C [Also in Divisions B5 C3 and Dl] A cigarette filter comprises an open cell foam produced by extruding a heat-softened composition comprising a thermoplastic resin, a blowing agent, 0.1-10% by weight of the heat-softened composition, of a nucleating agent and 2-20%, by weight of the nucleating agent, of polyethyleneglycol, the heat-softened composition being extruded through a die into a zone of lower pressure to allow foaming of the composition. The thermoplastic resin is preferably a polyamide, e.g. nylon 6, but other polymers or copolymers obtained by polymerisation including copolymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons, e.g. polystyrene or polyolefins, unsaturated nitriles, vinyl halides, vinylidene chloride, vinyl esters, vinylpyrrolidone, vinylpyrridines, or an acrylate ester are also contemplated.
