Abstract

1403808 Cellular thermoplastic polymer skinned articles SOC CHIMIQUE DES CHARBONNAGES 28 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 14953/73 Heading C3C [Also in Division B5] Articles of structural foams of thermoplastic synthetic polymers, i.e. having a skin of unfoamed polymer and an interior of cellular polymer, are made by injection moulding or extruding a mixture of the thermoplastic polymer with an at least partly crystalline, porous, hydrated substance which can be hydrated or de-hydrated reversibly without affecting its crystalline structure and the bonding of the molecules of the hydration water being labile whereby water is readily liberated. The hydrated substance may be brought to the desired granluar size before introduction into the interior of the polymer which is then either injection moulded or extruded through a die associated with a shaping device having a greater transverse section than that of the die. The hydrated substance may be a natural and synthetic zeolite or sepiolite. The polymers used in the examples were polystyrene, polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride.
