Abstract
1,190,840. Expandable styrene polymer particles. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 13 Dec., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 56670/67: Headings C3C and C3P. Expandable styrene polymer in the form of regularly-shaped particles, i.e. whose surfaces intersect at edges, are made by supplying expandable styrene polymer beads or pearls, containing a volatile liquid expanding agent, in admixture with a minor proportion by wt. of regularly-shaped styrene polymer particles, which may be expandable, to an extruder in which the mixture is heat-plastified under non- foaming conditions, extruding the mixture whilst cooling to prevent any foaming or expansion, and cutting or comminuting the extrudate. The expandable polystyrene may contain pentane as expanding agent.
