Abstract

853,141. Extrusion, injection moulding machines. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. March 14, 1957 [May 31, 1956], No. 8502/57. Class 87(2). A method of extruding separate " slugs " of plastic material for use in injection moulding or compression moulding machines comprises supplying the molten material to an orifice 7 by means of a continuously rotating screw 2 and intermittently interrupting the flow of material at the orifice 7, at least three times a minute by means of a valve 6 which produces cycles of flow and non flow of material, each interruption of flow causing a pressure and temperature increase in the material. The valve 6 may rotate at up to 300 times per minute and may be replaced by a reciprocating valve. The plastic material emerging from the orifice may be cut by a rotating knife (not shown).
