Abstract

1,027,502. Moulding polyurethane. S. A. CEMPO. Jan. 23, 1963 [Jan. 26, 1962], No. 2957/63. Heading B5A. In a process for moulding articles of polyurethane foam having a skin of polyurethane, the mould is made of a material having a heat conductivity less than 5À10<SP>-3</SP> (g. cal./sec.) (sq. cm.) (‹ C./cm.) and a specific heat higher than 0À1 cal./cm.<SP>3</SP> in the temperature range of 15‹ C. to 16‹ C. The liquid or paste to form the skin may be applied to the mould surface by spraying, brushing or rotational casting. The mould may be made of a resin, e.g. a flexible synthetic elastomer and supported in a plastics or metallic cradle. The constituents of the skin-forming polyurethane mixture may be mixed in a mixer head or applied from separate spray guns. The mould may be passed through an oven for setting of the resin. If a thin-walled mould is used the space between the mould and the cradle is filled with a low heat conductivity material, e.g. polyurethane. The mould surface may be cooled by a blast of air before receiving the skin-forming material and the skin may be similarly cooled before deposition of the foam material. The process may involve external heating of the mould.
