Abstract

849,847. Suspended ceilings. IONLITE Ltd., May 26, 1959 [Feb. 26, 1958], No. 6272/58. Class 20(4) A suspended ceiling comprises a plurality of panels including at least one light transmitting panel carried by a supporting grid structure constituted by an assembly of elements made from sheet metal, said elements being provided with means whereby they can be interlocked to form a rigid assembly, and one or more light sources are disposed at the rear of the panels. In the exemplified embodiment the elements comprise a plurality of main and secondary beams each of substantially V- shaped cross-section having a flat base 1 and outwardly bent flanges 2 at the free ends of the limbs to provide a support for the panels. The ends of the secondary beams are provided with tongues 4 adapted to affect interlocking engagement with slots 5 in the limbs of the main beams. The beams may be suspended with their bases 1 lowermost by adjustable hangers 12 each having an aperture 9 by which it is received on a retaining bar 8 which passes through apertures 10 in the main bar and through apertures 9 in plates 6 having slots 7 which receive the tongues 4 of the secondary beams. The beams may be inverted as shown in Fig. 4 with cover plates 15 slid over the flanges 2. In both arrangements, the points of junction of the beams are enclosed by covers 16. T-junctions and corner junctions, Figs. 2 and 5 (not shown) are also described.
