Abstract
849,676. Patterning fabrics. ENGLISH ROSE Ltd. June 24, 1958 [July 20, 1957], No. 23050/57. Class 42 (1). Fabric, knitted from thermoplastic yarn, particularly in ladies' nylon stockings, is patterned, e.g. to indicate a size marking, by forming holes in the required pattern by means of elements which penetrate the fabric and distort the loop structure, and heat-treating the distorted loop structure to render the holes substantially permanent. As shown, fabric 7 supported on a plate 9 is pierced by needles 1 which are lowered so as to enter holes 8 in plate 9. The needles are carried by a metal plate 4 heated by an electrical element 6 or high-pressure steam on the space between plate 4 and a further plate 5. Needles 1 are of such diameter as to open the stitches of the fabric without bursting them. Shoulders 3 on the needles trap the fabric against plate 9 and heat and set the open stitches. The needles may be of smooth silver steel, plate 4 of brass and plate 9 of a material with low heat conductivity such as " Tufnol " (Registered Trade Mark); if plate 9 is of metal it is heated to the same temperature as the needle shoulders.
