Abstract

Explosive substances are obtained in a desired physical form by causing the compound to separate from solution or suspension in the presence of one or more cellulose ethers either during the manufacture of the substance or as an independent step subsequent to manufacture. The separation may take the form of a precipitation or a crystallisation or re-crystallisation. As cellulose ethers there may be used alkyl cellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose the latter preferably being in the form of its sodium salt in amounts from 0,05-10% by weight of the weight of explosive substance. In Example (1) barium trinitroresorcinol is obtained by double decomposition of a barium salt and trinitroresorcinol in the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose (2)-(5) lead 2 : 4-dinitroresorcinol is obtained in various physical forms from lead acetate and 2 : 4-dinitroresorcinol; (6) lead 4 : 6-dinitroressorcinol is obtained from lead acetate and 4 : 6-dinitroresorcinol in the presence of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; (7) lead styphnate is obtained from magnesium styphnate and lead nitrate in the presence of methyl cellulose; (8) lead azide is obtained from sodium azide and lead acetate in the presence of carboxy methyl cellulose; (9) diazodinitrophenol is obtained from sodium picramate in the presence of methyl cellulose; (10) mercury fulminate is dissolved in ammonia solution containing methyl cellulose and precipitated by adding acetic acid.
