Abstract
Initiators of detonations are prepared in the form of anhedra, flakes, or thin plates by controlling the structure of crystals produced by precipitation by increasing the density or viscosity of the liquid in which the crystals are separated by means of a non-collodal solution which has no chemical or appreciable solvent action on the explosive. For example, lead azide is precipitated by the addition of a solution of sodium azide to a solution of lead acetate containing sodium nitrate, or by the simultaneous addition of solutions of sodium azide and lead acetate to a solution of sodium nitrate.
