Abstract
848,728. Transferring freight containers to and from vehicles. FLEXI-VAN Inc. Jan. 28, 1958 [Jan. 31, 1957], No. 2831/58. Class 78 (4). To transfer a freight container 40 (Fig. 1) from a road wheel chassis 80 to a rail vehicle 10 the container is first slid from the road wheel chassis on to a frame 34 carried by a turntable on the rail vehicle and then turned into alignment with the rail vehicle. The container 40 may be slid from the chassis of the road vehicle by a pinion carried on the chassis and meshing with a rack on the base of the container. Alternatively as an the construction illustrated, the container is pushed rearwardly by a tractor (not shown) from a chassis 80 forming the rear wheels of the composite road vehicle, on to the turntable. The container is supported by its longitudinal channel members 36 from channel members 82 on the road wheel chassis 80 and from rollers 42 on channel members 34 on the turntable 12. Latches 104 holding the road wheel chassis 80 to the rail vehicle and latches 58 locking the turntable in the transfer position can be released manually. Securing vehicles on carrier vehicles.-When the container 40 is swung into alignment with the rail vehicle its kingpin pushes aside one of two locking sectors 150 biased by springs 154 and released by handles 158 when the trailer is to be unloaded. Locking sectors 150 are mounted on a carriage 120 which can be moved by a lead screw 134 to suit the length of the container. The container is also locked to the turntable by manually released catches 58 which engage apertures in the side members 36 of the trailer which may alternatively be engaged by manually released catches 84 on the road wheel chassis 80. Guiding the freight container into position.- The longitudinal members 36 of the container 40 are flared to guide them on to the channels 34 on the turntable 12 and the channels 34 curve downwardly at their ends to facilitate engagement. As the container is turned into alignment with the rail vehicle its rear end engages a curved ramp 148 and the kingpin at its forward end engages a curved ramp 146 to guide it into parallelism with the bed of the rail track.
