The effective width b of the electrodes of a rectangular crystal plate varies along the length of the plate according to the expression b = a sin n#x/l where x is the distance from one end of the plate, I is its total length, a is the maximum effective width of the electrodes and n is the order of the desired overtone (for the fundamental Á= 1). The shape of the electrodes causes damping of undesired overtones. The electrodes need not be similar, symmetrical or completely superposed, the effective width being the width of the superposed portions. The invention may be applied to quartz plates having a length-width ratio greater than 4. In one embodiment, the electrodes are arranged in n completely superposed pairs, alternate pairs being connected in antiphase. If the fundamental frequency is to be used, each side of the plate is provided with a single electrode having a maximum width at the centre of the plate equal to the width of the plate.
