Abstract

848,259. Chucks; tapping attachments. HERBERT Ltd., A. Feb. 4, 1959 [Feb. 3, 1958], No. 3400/58. Class 83 (3). A split collet 36 for a tap &c. having a non- circular driving - end, comprises a bore, the inner end 41 of which is of the same cross-section as the driving-end of the tool. The end 41 of the bore is of square crosssection, and the collet housed in a socket 25 having a driving-pin 33 engaged in a slot 38 in the end of the collet. A bevel-closing nut 35 on the socket engages the conical end of the collet. The shank of the socket is keyed at 24 to a member 13 driven by a housing 11, through friction-plates 18, 19. A spring 21 between the plates and a bearing 22 is adjusted by rotation of a cap 12 engaging screw-threads on the housing. The axial position of the socket in member 13 is maintained by springs 26, 29, spring 26 acting between the socket and member 13, and spring 29 between the head of a screw 32 in the socket and an abutment 30 in the member 13.
