Abstract
1,099,290. Boring bars. MADISON INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 7, 1966 [June 7, 1966], No. 39909/66. Heading B3C. An adjustable tool assembly, e.g. a boring bar, of the kind described in the parent Specification, comprises a tool body 70 which is held in a collet 18 and which has threaded engagement with a flange 21 of the collet, a disc 81 secured to the end of the tool body which has ears 82 to prevent rotation of the tool body relative to the boring bar, the disc 81 also providing a thrust surface for spring washers 80 which bear on a shoulder 79 formed on the bar the collet being drawn by the spring washers into the bar to grip the tool body, rotation of the collet, which can be effected by means of an external hexagonal portion 20, serving to adjust the position of the tool body axially. The tool body has wedge-shaped projections 73 which engage a complementary groove 83 in the disc 81 to prevent relative rotation between the tool body and disc. The collet 18 has slots 23 the terminal portions of which are filled with elastomeric material 27. In a modification (Figs. 3, 4, 5, not shown) the collet is received in a bushing member (15) inserted in the boring bar and the tool body (93) is itself formed at its end as a collet having a cap nut (97) adapted to cause the tool body to grip a replaceable tool bit (90). The tool bit which is keyed to the tool body may be adjusted in position in the tool body by a screw (92) which projects adjustably from its inner end and rests on the base of the recess in the tool body. The slots of the tool body are filled with elastomeric material (99).
