848,241. Gripper mechanism. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A. G. Oct. 23, 1957 [Oct. 25, 1956; Dec. 20, 1956], No. 33092/57. Class 100(1) A gripper for use in a printing machine has a tongue urged by a spring into contact with an oscillatable support bracket disposed between the side walls of the gripper, the said gripper tongue being adjustable with respect to the bracket by means of a screw bolt which is arranged on the bracket between said gripper side walls. The bracket 6, Fig. 1, is fixed to a camoperated shaft 5 on a delivery cylinder 2 of a printing machine. The gripper 7, mainly of an inverted U-shaped cross-section, is arranged in a freely rotatable manner on the tube 5 so as to straddle the bracket 6 and rests on the head of a bolt 18 disposed in a tapped hole in a part 20 of the bracket 6, being biassed into contact therewith by a spring 8 disposed between the lower end of the bolt and a cross-piece uniting the legs of the gripper. The tongue of the gripper co-operates with an anvil 4 and the clearance between the two is variable to accommodate different thicknesses of paper at the same time keeping the length of the spring constant by screwing the bolt 18 up or down in the part 20, access to the bolt being provided by a hole 19 in the gripper. The bolt 18 is locked in set position by means of a bolt 22 which draws together the slotted ends of the part 20. In a modification Fig. 4, a bolt 9 having a wedge-shaped head 10 is disposed horizontally in a recess in the upper side of the bracket 6, passes through a hole in the bracket 6, and is engaged at the other side by a nut 11. The head 10 bears against an inclined surface 12 on the gripper and rotation of the nut 11 causes longitudinal displacement of the bolt and thereby varies the spacing between the gripper and the anvil. A spring 13 urges the bolt in the direction of the gripper tongue. In another form (Fig. 6, not shown) somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 4 but without the parts 9, 10, 11, the part of the bracket against which the gripper 7 bears is separated by a slot from the main part of the bracket, and the width of the slot can be adjusted by a bolt, the head of which is accessible through a hole in the gripper.
