Abstract

848,028. Piezo-electric crystals. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. Oct. 17, 1958 [Dec. 24, 1957], No. 39998/57. Class 40(8). A piezo-electric resonator is tuned to a desired frequency by means of a trimming condenser which is adjusted before the resonator, together with the condenser, is hermetically sealed in an envelope. An electroded crystal plate 1 and a condenser 14 connected in series or parallel with the crystal are mounted within an envelope 13 provided with exhaust tubulation 16, 18. The condenser is of the type having deposited gold electrodes and the capacitance is adjusted by increasing the area of one of the electrodes. To do this, gold is vaporized from a filament 20 whilst frequency measurements are made. The envelope is subsequently sealed off at the tube 16. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), the condenser is of the movable vane type having air or solid dielectric. It is so arranged that adjustment is possible by inserting a screwdriver through the exhaust tubulation before the pumping-out and sealing process.
