Abstract

847,627. Laminates. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. April 29, 1957 [May 1, 1956], No. 13610/57. Class 140. [Also in Groups XV and XXXVI] A flush circuit pattern on an insulating backing is formed by a method comprising the steps of providing a circuit pattern (2) on one side of the insulating backing (1), supporting the insulating backing in a configuration that is a negative of the circuit pattern, and pressing the circuit pattern flush with the surface of the insulating backing. The circuit pattern and the supporting configuration (3) may be formed as shown in the foil on opposite sides of a sheet of foil-clad laminate having a central insulating layer. The insulating backing may be a sheet of phenolic resin, and may be provided with a bonded layer of copper foil on each side. Using the known photo-etch process, the positive circuit pattern may be produced on one side of the backing, and the negative pattern on the other. After the circuit pattern has been pressed flush, the negative pattern may be removed by known methods, e.g. abrasion, or may be left on. The technique may also be employed in any situation where a design of, a material is brought into flush relationship with a backing material.
